Definition - What does Functional Capacity Evaluation mean?

A functional capacity evaluation (FCE) refers to a compliation of tests and evaluations combined in order to determine a worker's ability to function in the required tasks and circumstances within a workplace. A functional capacity evaluation relies on comparing the health status and body functions of an employee with the requirements of the worksite.

The purpose of the function capacity evaluation is to determine the fitness for an employee in a determined job and following an extended period of time. Tests include areas that evaluate strength, endurance, speed, flexibility, and physical effort. A function capacity evaluation is also used to assess the capacity of an injured worker or a worker that has suffered an accident, and their ability to return to work. The benchmark in a function capacity evaluation is if the employee's health matches or exceeds the requirement of the worksite.

There are two types of function capacity evaluations that are generally utilized. These are:

  • Mental functional capacity evaluation (MFCE) - measures emotional and mental capacity
  • Physical functional capacity evaluation (PFCE) - measures physical condition and functioning
